As an architect and artist, Carl Verdickt founded the research studio A-SPACE, with a focus on architecture and landscape art. After studying architecture in Antwerp and Paris and completing an internship with Bob Van Reeth, he co-founded the firm Verdickt & Verdickt with his brother. Later, building on further studies in painting and ceramics at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Verdickt expanded his practice.

I see architecture and landscape art as deeply connected through the genius loci - the spirit of the place - and I believe that the solution lies within the site itself. Architecturally, I strive to create innovative buildings that feel as though they've always been there; artistically, I depict fictional landscapes in which we dwell.

In his architectural practice, Verdickt treats heritage as raw material. Sustainability begins with using what is already there — through a minimum of strategic interventions, existing buildings and sites are given new purpose and meaning. Where new construction is needed, it serves as a catalyst for compact, connected living that preserves rather than consumes the landscape around it.

In his artistic practice, Carl Verdickt works with found natural and man-made materials, such as local clay, seeds, shells, as well as glass and litter. Often, he searches for the origin of a landscape during walks. He reflects on the duality between pristine nature and human consumption of it. His works often take the form of bas-reliefs, but he also applies his architectural background to create forms that every architect dreams of: towers. During (evening) walks, new works emerge one by one. They encourage reflection on the way we rapidly consume the physical and material remnants of what remains, while collectively yearning for natural beauty and space.
